NewJeans Achieves 2nd Place on Japan’s Oricon Annual Rookie Rankings with Nearly ¥2.1 Billion in Sales
NewJeans has proven their immense popularity in Japan, ranking at the top of Oricon’s annual rookie rankings for 2024.
According to their agency ADOR on January 10, NewJeans (Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein) secured 2nd place in the "Rookie Rankings" for Artist Sales in the Oricon Annual Ranking 2024. This marks the highest ranking ever achieved by an overseas artist. The Rookie Rankings compile total sales from singles, albums, streaming, and music DVDs. During the evaluation period (December 11, 2023–December 8, 2024), NewJeans earned an impressive ¥2.09 billion in sales, according to Oricon.
NewJeans made their official debut in Japan in June 2023 and quickly gained traction. Their debut Japanese single, Supernatural, debuted at No. 1 on the Oricon charts and received a "Gold" certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for selling over 100,000 copies. To date, the single has sold more than 1.3 million copies (as of December, according to Circle Chart). The title track Supernatural not only topped major Japanese music charts upon release but also dominated charts in Korea and internationally.
In addition to their chart success, NewJeans achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the fastest overseas artist to perform at Japan’s iconic Tokyo Dome, just 1 year and 11 months after their debut. They hosted a fan meeting, Bunnies Camp 2024 Tokyo Dome, on June 26–27, 2024, selling out all tickets and drawing a total of over 91,200 fans.
Building on their success, NewJeans received the Outstanding Work Award at Japan’s most prestigious music awards show, the 66th Japan Record Awards, for Supernatural. They further solidified their presence in Japan by appearing on prominent year-end television programs. Notably, they became the first K-pop girl group to perform at Japan’s largest indoor year-end music festival, Countdown Japan 24/25, on December 31, 2024.
NewJeans’ meteoric rise in Japan underscores their global appeal and their growing influence in the Japanese music industry.
