BLACKPINK's 2nd regular album 'Pink Venom' was the first Korean artist's song to top the Spotify Top Songs global chart for two days in a row.
On the Spotify Daily Top Songs chart released on the 21st (US local time), 'Pink Venom' was counted as being streamed 6,71,743 times in the previous day. Although it is slightly lower than the number on the first day of release (793,036), this is still the number of streaming more than any other song by a female artist worldwide released this year.
No K-pop has ever topped the Spotify Top Songs Global Chart in a row. This is a very positive sign considering that Blackpink's full-fledged stage activities have even not yet started and that their 2nd full-length album will be released on September 16th.
Spotify is the world's largest music streaming platform, used by more than 400 million people in 184 countries. As it is one of the platforms that is reflected in the Billboard main chart, major foreign media are paying attention to it as it has a high ripple effect.
Billboard highlighted the music and music video of 'Pink Venom' and said, "Blackpink has successfully opened the prelude to the 'BORN PINK' project. We look forward to seeing what kind of global record Blackpink, which has created tension in the global pop music market."
NME said, "We confirmed Blackpink's self-confidence for a reason. 'Pink Venom' is Blackpink's dignifiedness itself. It’s great that the performance is backed up.”
'Pink Venom' is a hip-hop genre song with BLACKPINK's unique charisma. The sound of a traditional Korean instrument in harmony with the strong beat catches the ears from the intro, and the sharp rap and deadly vocals that are put on top of it maximize the charm of each of the four members.
The song has so far topped the iTunes charts in 74 countries around the world, including the United States and the United Kingdom, and occupied the top of the world-wide song charts for the second day. It also swept various detailed charts of QQ Music, China's largest music site.
It is also explosively popular on YouTube. The music video for 'Pink Venom' surpassed 100 million views in about 29 hours after it was released, setting a new record for the shortest among K-pop girl group music videos that reached the same number of views.
It climbed to the top of YouTube trending in 90 regions around the world, including the United States, and has maintained its top spot in the world-wide ranking for the third day.
